Maths Fortnight

We have had an amazing time over the past two weeks preparing for our market stalls. Children across the school embarked upon special projects to create objects to sell at their stalls. We had many great objects on sale including placemats, cookies, lollies, cupcakes and coasters. Lots of exciting maths, literacy and science learning took place and the children were very proud of their work. Children learned about how to use their skills in everyday life activities and were delighted to learn about making a profit. Each grade will be using their money to purchase something useful for their classroom.
Our junior school children also participated in a Green Hat workshop where they experimented with ‘planks’. This was an exciting incursion where children developed their creativity, problem solving, maths and science learning. It was also great to see our children working so cooperatively in teams.
We were also very lucky to have some special visitors come into our classrooms to talk about how they use maths in their everyday lives. It was very interesting to hear all about how Tony (Chloe’s grandad) used his maths skills to run and manage his fruit stall. It was great for the children to hear about real life maths experiences.

Come along parents.

We would love if our parents could come along sometime over the next two weeks and help us with our project. You could help with baking, advertising, maths, literacy and design and technology lessons.
As we are learning why literacy and numeracy are so very important for our everyday lives it would be great if some parents could come into our classroom to speak to us about how you use maths in your everyday life/job. Come and speak to Mrs. O’ Regan if you would like to get invloved.

Some of our learning will include: measuring, time, fractions, money, addition and subtraction, procedure and story writing, as well as planning and designing our packaging and advertising our product.
